On November 20, 2014, President Barack Obama announced executive actions for immigration reform. There were two significant initiatives:
Deferred Action: Allows the parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been in the United States since January 1, 2010 to request deferred action and work authorization. Deferred action will provide these parents protection from deportation. These parents will also be eligible for permission to work legally in the United States.
Provisional Waiver: Expands the provisional waiver of unlawful presence to include the spouses and sons and daughters of lawful permanent residents, and the sons and daughters of U.S. citizens. Previously this waiver was available only to the spouses of U.S. citizens. This provisional waiver allows you to become eligible for lawful permanent residency.
These new policy initiatives are expected to be implemented in mid-May 2015.
You can begin preparing by consulting an immigration attorney who can help you to determine the supporting documents you should begin gathering for your application. This way you will be ready to file your request once the USCIS implements these reforms and starts accepting the applications for Deferred Action or the Provisional Waiver.
